Blog4 Quarter 4- Rules

A update on the book Rules, is that author never really gave a diagnosis for David. The last few chapters are showing that David has grew and learned a lot of stuff and rules of the daily life. He learned how to feed him self. A little reminder of the book, David is a boy who has autism and his 12 year old sister Catherine has to teach him rules while their mom works. She tries her best to show her brother the wrong's and the right's. It doesn't say how old David is but autism has a big effect on your brain and it stops you from learning and doing things different from what a doctor would call a "normal brain" would do. There is all kinds of autism but David high functioning autism. He could do learned the simple life things like how to feed yourself and how to clean up after yourself. He is a non sociable person which means he needs help when it comes to socializing with people, and thats what Catherine been trying to teach him. Towards the end of the book Catherine meets some new friends of her own and they make Catherine think to herself " What is normal?"

In the book rules a sign post that kept coming up is Memory Moment. In the chapter " If you could only choose one, choose carefully" Catherine brought up something that happen when they were at the grocery store with David and she asked him " You remember when you wanted Ice Cream? And you also wanted Cupcakes? And you picked Ice Cream." I think Catherine asked him that because well life is just like that. Its a two way street. You could choose the bad road or the good road, and you have to choose carefully. This memory moment really stuck out with me because Catherine is a 12 year old and she really didn't plan on teaching her brother things that any other 12 year old would think everyone knows. And her teaching him things so that he won't be teased in his future, I mean it doesn't get better than that.
